What is a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)?
A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is a group of breathing tests that measure how well your lungs work. It evaluates how much air you can breathe in and out and how smoothly air flows through your lungs.
Why are These Tests Done?
PFT and PFT with DLCO help doctors to:
- Diagnose and monitor asthma, COPD, and other lung diseases
- Evaluate shortness of breath or chronic cough
- Detect interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis
- Assess lung function before surgery
- Monitor lung damage due to smoking or occupational exposure
- Evaluate lung recovery after infections, including COVID-19

What to Expect During the Test
- You will be seated comfortably
- A mouthpiece and nose clip will be used
- You will follow simple breathing instructions
- The test takes approximately 15–30 minutes
What is PFT with DLCO?
PFT with DLCO (Diffusing Capacity of the Lung for Carbon Monoxide) is an advanced lung function test. In addition to routine PFT, it measures how efficiently oxygen passes from the lungs into the bloodstream.

Both tests are safe, painless, and non-invasive. The gases used in DLCO testing are harmless and used in very small quantities.
