What is Mammography?
Mammography is a special X-ray test of the breasts. It helps doctors find early changes in breast tissue, including lumps or signs of breast cancer, even before symptoms appear.
Who Should Have a Mammography Test?
- Women above 40 years as part of regular health screening
- Women with breast pain, lump, or nipple discharge
- Women with a family history of breast cancer
- As advised by your doctor for follow-up or diagnosis
- What Happens During the Test?
- You will stand in front of the mammography machine
- Each breast is gently compressed for a few seconds
- X-ray images are taken from different angles
- The test usually takes 10–15 minutes
Why is Mammography Important?
- Early detection of breast problems increases the chances of successful treatment. Mammography can identify issues at a very early stage when they may not be felt by hand.
Is Mammography Safe?
- Yes. Mammography uses a very low dose of radiation and is considered safe. Some discomfort may be felt due to compression, but it lasts only a short time.
